There is regular participation in slaughter lamb competitions to determine
the quality of the carcasses. Our rams that are bred from the stud, are bred
with our commercial ewe's and it is the their lambs that is signed up for
the slaughter lamb competitions. This shows us the true impact of the
stud on our farm. It is very important for us to produce a good
slaughter lamb at a young age.

This lamb was the champion singlelamb for the lamb slaughter
competition held in Februarie 2008.
In 2004 the second and the third best lamb on the hook at the Nationals was
produced from our commercial flock with a performance of 99.78% and 99.70%
respectively .
In 2005 the fourth best group of four lambs also produced from the
commercial flock with a performance of 96. 85%.
At present all animals are being marketed at GWK/LAW at De Aar and
approximately 80% of the lambs qualify for ‘certified natural lambs after
which they are then delivered to chain stores like Woolworths, Shoprite
Checkers and Pick a Pay. These lambs must comply with a certain form and fat
code to qualify and must be produced organically.
Ian Welsch from Nieu-Zeeland whom is known for measuring the eye muscle
deepness and eye muscle width with a sonar already visited us a few times.
Each time I have him measured all the rams to see which of them has good eye
muscle and which not. His remark the last times (17. 07. 2007) has been:
"Once again your results are execellent by industry standards". The
descendants of Smokey, especially, have done well.
PRODUCTION AUCTION OF 50 RAMS AND 30 EWES WILL BE HELD IN KIMBERLEY
AT THE KIMBERLEY AUCTION KRAAL ON Thursday 27 AUGUST 2009 AT 10 AM
Just like at the previous auction in 2008 all rams and ewes will be of excellent
quality. Heartfelt thanks to all buyers that supported me in 2008.
THE FOLLOWING IS INFORMATION ABOUT THE ANIMALS THAT WILL BE ON AUCTION.

weighed on a monthly basis by GWK agent. Al the information was sent to the
Institute for Agricultural research in Middelburg (EC). Selection index
worked out for every animal there is as well as gram/day growth. The
selection index of every ram will be available on the day of auction and
will be sold with the ram.. The gram/day growth will also be available.
Some of the older rams were used with some of the commercial ewes after the
fieldtestphase. All rams will be either a 2tooth or still be a lamb at day
of auction.
All rams were already tested for Brucella Ovis and will also be tested
before the auction for fertility. All rams are tested yearly for Brucella
Ovis and none of our rams were ever tested positive for this disease. If you
require more information the health of our rams feel free to contact Nadia
Swanepoel our local livestock inspector on 053-6312592.
All the rams shall be conditioned for the auction, they will be in a good
condition, but not over fed.
If you have any enquiries relating to the rams and their indexes, you are
more than welcome to contact me or to come and inspect them on the farm.
All of
the ewes that is up for auction will be young animals. Most of them will be
either scanned expecting or would have been with a ram.
Here is a few photo's of the rams that will be up on auction.

Group of lambs that will be up for auction.

The same group of lambs

Ram No. 080034with a selection index of 124
All ewes up for auction will be young ewes that walked with the ram and they
will all be scanned and verified to be pregnant with young.
Indexes of all rams will be available from me for further enquiry.
Rams will
be conditioned 8 weeks before the auction and will be in a good reproductive
condition.
Some of the older rams was already used on some ewes (commercial and stud ewes)
to calculate their breeding performance and to transfer the good genes to our
own animals.
As the stud grows, it is important to me that the younger rams with the better
genes transfer this to their descendants.
I had 9 animals in the National Field Ram auction and all 9 passed the test with
flying colours.
Not one of them failed due to negative growth.
Rams that will be up for auction will either be lambs or 2 tooth. No older
animals will be up for auction.
